A farmhouse cellar in East Earl Township was built the way every cellar around here was built: field stone, lime mortar, dug as deep as the family needed it. What makes this end of the county harder on those walls than the limestone valley is the soil pressed up against them, because red shale clay holds water and stays heavy for months on end.

Stone walls under that sort of sustained load do not crack, they lean. Courses move inward a fraction at a time as the mortar loses its grip, and because the movement is slow and fairly even it is very easy to miss. A string line along the wall is usually what finds it, and by then a section can be a couple of inches out of plumb.

Displaced courses come down and go back in line, the whole face gets repointed with a mix that stays flexible against old stone, and steel goes in where a span needs the help. Can you use steel on a stone wall, or only on block?
