The structural call in Ephrata is nearly always the same crack. Horizontal, running the length of the wall along a mortar joint roughly halfway up, with the block above it leaning slightly into the room. Owners find it when a shelf stops sitting flush against the wall, or when a finished basement starts to bulge behind the panelling.

The cause is what the Cocalico basin does to red shale. It saturates and then it stays saturated, and saturated clay is heavy and it pushes. Further along it wants steel, or excavation and straightening. Whichever it is, the drainage goes in alongside it, because a reinforced wall with saturated clay still pressed against it is a repair waiting to be tested.
